Once again, we have our friends, Karen and Hervie to thank for indroducing us to this Bangladeshi restaurant on Buford Hwy. in Atlanta. Karen told us that reservations are necessary, especially on the weekends. They don’t serve alcohol but you are welcome and encouraged to bring your own beer or wine. The prices are great and since you bring your own drinks, this place is most economical! I found that a Riesling or Pinot Noir are good choices for the flavors and spices used in Indian/Banglasdeshi food.

There were 6 of us in the party, we were greeted warmly by the owner. He had suggestions for us that would give us a variety of dishes and would be served family style. We went along with that after discussing some restrictions, such as, gluten free and vegetarian choices.

We started off with Halim, a spicy vegetarian soup made with pureed mixed vegetables and different kinds of lentils. It was very good and quite spicy! Plates of naan bread made with garlic, cilantro and onions were brought out and that was the best naan bread I’ve ever had! We were served chicken teeka, marinated boneless white meat marinated in a special “tandoori sauce” made with yogurt and spices. This seemed to be a favorite. I wasn’t eating meat so I had Shaag paneer which is chopped spinach with homemade cheese, garlic and spices, okra sauteed with onions and herbs, and aloo daal, potatoes and orange lentils. I loved all of these! We also had a lamb dish and Tandoori shrimp and of course, lots of delcious basmati rice. We had two kinds of chutneys, mango and spicy onion. These complemented all the dishes well. At the end of the meal, each couple was given a delcious yogurt dessert to share. He would have brought more if we’d wanted it.

What a great experience, we felt like we had a personal chef and the restaurant was full! We were all so stuffed when we left and all that food for only $35.00 a couple!

Our friends, Karen and Hervie, told us about this neighborhood Italian American restaurant located at 3199 Paces Ferry Place in Buckhead(behind Whole Foods) on West Paces Ferry Rd. Their emphasis is on seafood and the server told us they do lots of menu items well but that the seafood items were outstanding.

We perused the extensive wine menu and chose a Primotivo that was moderately priced at $34.00 a bottle. It was very good, especially after it had a chance to breathe. The name of it was Enzo, I didn’t see it on the website so I think they may change their wine list often.

For an appetizer, we ordered fried goat cheese with honey. You cannot go wrong with goat cheese! The bread that is brought to the table is so delicious! It’s warm and soft, some wheat and some white, served with olive oil. I ordered a mushroom ragu with 3 different kinds of mushrooms, portabellos, shitake and button. It was wonderful! Keoni ordered halibut with grilled tomatoes, asparagus and tempura battered shrimp on top, served over polenta. Everything was so so good! We will definitely be back,

This is our second vist to this place. We really love it! Their food is fresh and they use local produce when they can. Their special today was a salad with locally grown broccoli, mixed greens, sauted pancetta, toasted pine nuts and a tomato vinaigrette. It was so delicious, I ate every morsel! Keoni had the all natural turkey breast with cheddar, greens and smoked tomato mayo. His side was frites with another side of that smoked tomato mayo. Their fries are really good and you can choose from a list of sauces to dip them in.

One of thier appetzers is little peppadews (peppers) stuffed with goat cheese and they served them in a cute little glass. We want to try them next time. I wanted to take a picture for blogging purposes but Keoni didn’t think it was a good idea to ask! They also serve bacon in a glass with peanut butter??? It’s supposed to be good.

They have a great beer list. I had Kira white ale and Keoni had a Bell amber. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the sun!

Keoni and I tried this cute little restaurant in Sandy Springs today. It’s located in the Kroger shopping off Roswell Rd. They have all kinds of tacos made with corn or flour tortillas, quesadillas, nachos and salads. I ordered a chicken with mole and sesame seeds and a veggie with grilled peppers and onions, beans and rice. Keoni ordered a fish taco with jalapeno slaw and a chicken with grilled pineapple and quacamole. The fish one was his favorite and the veggie was mine. Their chips and salsa are really good and fresh, the chips having a slight lime flavor. The tacos start at only $2.50 each and 2 was plenty for us. We didn’t have drinks but they do have a full bar and lots of different kinds of margaritas, including a “skinny” one without the mix! Everything was so delicious and fresh tasting and the staff is so friendly!

This was our third month of our “Dinner Club” and Korean BBQ was my choice. I must say I think all 10 of us enjoyed it. Tammy suggested Hae Woon Dae on Buford Hwy. OTP (outside the Perimeter, for non-Atlantans).

We were led to a low table where we sat on the floor , after removing our shoes. We all ordered Korean beers (Hite) and orders of dumplings as appetizers. They were very good! I ordered Bulgogi which is very common Korean dish made of marinated beef in a Korean sauce. Don’t ask me what’s in the Korean sauce, that’s how the menu reads. Keoni ordered chicken in a spicy Korean sauce and they were both very good. Tammy had shrimp and some ordered short ribs. The meat is cooked on a grill in the middle of the table, so you can participate. They began bringing all the side dishes (kimchi) and bowls of white rice and plates of romaine lettuce. Kimchi is any number of different vegetables that are pickled or fermented. Some that we had were cucumbers, bok choy, spinach, sweet potatoes and daikon. I also love the sliced jalepenos and whole garlic cloves that will keep all Vampires away! You just put your meat, rice, kimchi and sauces and wrap up! So delicious!

What a fun experience we had trying new foods and meeting new friends!

For our second “Dinner Club” outing, Tammy chose La Tavola, located in Virginia Highlands. I must say it was an excellent choice! We had seven in attendance this time but we did sadly miss Tri. He was skiing with his brother in Vermont!

We started out with an antipasti of mixed olives, parmesean cheese, marinated vegetables and roasted garlic served with Italian bread. We ordered a bottle of Edmeades Zinfadel (this later turned into 3 bottles). Most in the group ordered Tagliolini with a mushhroom ragu with truffle oil and pecorino ramano. It was delicious! I talked Tammy into sharing with me. We shared a striped bass with castelluccio lentils and artichoke crema with speck( a type of proscuitto). We also shared a mixed greens salad. Everything was so good! We received excellent service from Willy and Alli, the bartender was also very helpful in pointing out her favorite dishes on the menu.

Willy brought over a “sweet” surprise at the end of the meal. An assortment of about 5 desserts, including tira misu, lemon cheesecake and a chocolate flourless cake. All were so delicious and decadent! What a great night out with friends!

We went to this place right after Top Flr to have another glass of wine. It’s located in downtown Atlanta on West Peachtree Place. It was a quiet Monday night so we had a chance to talk with the bartender/manager and server, Douglas and Joelle. They were so nice! They opened a couple of different wines for us to try. I was interested in the menu, French and North African cuisine. They have small plates, salads and entrees. I noticed on their website that they have specials on Mondays and Tuesdays. Monday is a choice of 3 different pastas and a glass of wine for $15.00 and Tuesday is steak and frites and a glass of wine for $15.00. Looks like we have another place to go!

This is a great tucked away place in Midtown! I was staying at a hotel in Atlanta and the Greek restaurant we were going to check out was closed. It wasn’t meant to be! With a shake of his iphone, Keoni came up with Top Flr which was right around the corner. It is a tall, narrow building on the corner of Ponce and Myrtle Streets.

When you walk in there’s a bar to the left and one to the right. Here I am, stuck in the middle. We decided to go to the smaller right side and eat at the bar. The bartender was very helpful and went over the menu in sections, giving us his favorite dishes and/or the most popular ones. I ordered a nice glass of Easton Zinfadel and Keoni ordered rum and coke. We decided to order something from each section and share. We started with a tuna tartare on flatbread with Thai miso pesto and avocado. It was delicious and a huge portion! Next we had a mixed green salad which had blueberries, chevre (the best I’ve ever tasted, so creamy!) and a honey lavender dressing. We also had the hangar steak with ginger aujus cooked medium, which was perfection. I told Keoni I only wanted a couple of bites and he said I ate more than he did! We also had spaetzle ( a type of egg noodle found in German cuisine) with petite mushrooms, roasted shallots and grenobloise (sauce of browned butter, capers, parsley and bits of lemon). Next time I would like to try the white bean hummus and the pizza with carmelized onions, olive tapenade and parmesean.

This is definitely a place we would go back to. We loved the intimate feel of the place along with the fresh ingredients and good, simple food!
